Coptis chinensis, a traditional Chinese botanical also known as Huang Lian, is a berberine-containing root. Berberine, found in many plant species has direct antimicrobial activity and has also been shown to block the adherance of bacteria to erythrocytes and epithelial cells. Thus it is possible for berberine to exert an
antimicrobial effect, even against organisms that do not exhibit in vitro sensitivity to the alkaloid.
