A natural constituent of vegetables of the Brassica genus (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts) that induces cytochrome P450 enzymes related to estrogen metabolism. The end result is increased 2-hydroxylation of estrogens, which is protective against estrogen-related cancers. Indole-3-Carbinol also causes cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, with a resultant down-regulation of hyperproliferation.
