Helps Maintain Healthy Eye Function*
PRODUCT DISCUSSION
PhysioLogics Ocular Defense Plus delivers an extraordinary combination of
nutrients, including Lutein, Riboflavin, and Beta-Carotene for comprehensive
support of eye function and antioxidants Vitamins C, Vitamin E and Selenium for
oxidative support.*
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Lutein, a yellow pigment that provides color in marigolds, is one of the most
abundant carotenoids found in the macula and supports eye health.* As an
antioxidant, Lutein serves as singlet-oxygen quencher, helping to minimize free
radical damage generated by the exposure of the eye lens to oxygen and light.*
The yellow color of macular carotenoids is crucial for the absorption of high
energy blue light. Lutein contains hydroxyl groups that interact with the polar
head groups of phospholipids, locking the molecules in a position that spans the
eye membrane and allowing it to react with free radicals generated in both
aqueous and membrane phases, thus broadening its antioxidant capabilities.*
Bilberry contains over 15 different naturally-occurring anthocyanosides, which are phenolic compounds with beneficial effects.* The body converts Beta-Carotene to Vitamin A, a nutrient that helps maintain the health of the eyes and is essential for good vision.* The wide variety of antioxidants in this product, including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Selenium, fight the cell-damaging free radicals that can lead to oxidative stress.* The B Vitamin Riboflavin helps support normal vision.*
CLINICAL EVIDENCE
- Lutein has been shown to be beneficial to long-term visual health. Seventeen participants were randomized in a double-blind study involving dietary supplementation with Lutein (15 mg), alpha-tocopherol (100 mg), or placebo, three times a week for up to two years. Visual performance, acuity and glare sensitivity were measured as parameters of vision health. In all parameters measured, subjects who consumed the Lutein had significant improvements in vision health when compared to the other groups. (Olmedilla et al, 2003)
- In a cross-sectional study conducted in India, 1,112 subjects underwent eye examinations plus evaluations for blood levels of antioxidants. A significant inverse association was found between decline in eye health and blood levels of lutein, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. This study supports the use of Ocular Defense Plus, which contains these three nutrients, for the maintenance of healthy eye function. (Dherani et al, 2008)

nutrients that are associated with eye health.*
