Ultra Uni-Pros-Trol™ softgels provided by Douglas Laboratories® provide a wide range of nutrients to support prostate health, including a supercritical CO2 extract of saw palmetto, lycopene, as well as standardized pygeum and nettle extracts. Additionally, Ultra Uni-Pros-Trol provides ingredients such as lutein that are not typically found in male health formulas. This formulation also provides a significant amount of d-gamma-tocopherol.
FUNCTIONS
As men age, the function of their prostate gland tends to change. Studies indicate that saw palmetto may be able to maintain healthy conversion rates between testosterone and the more active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), via its effect on the enzyme alpha-5-reductase.* Saw palmetto has also shown the ability to modify alpha1-adrenoceptor properties. This effect on alpha1-adrenoceptors may be responsible for saw palmetto’s ability to provide support to the urinary tract and the prostate. Saw palmetto extracts have also been found to help maintain healthy levels of prostaglandins and leukotrienes which in turn support health inflammatory processes.
Pygeum extract can support healthy prolactin and cholesterol levels in the prostate, which in turn can decrease uptake and reduce the number of binding sites for testosterone. In addition, pygeum extract, like saw palmetto, can help maintain healthy levels of prostaglandins.*
Other nutrients have also shown promise for prostate health. Phytosterols, such as those found in extracts of pumpkin seeds as well as those found in soy have been shown to support urine flow, and frequency of urination.* Lutein, a compound not often found in prostate support formulas has been shown to work synergistically with lycopene at the cellular level to help support the already known positive affects of lycopene on prostate health. The form of lycopene that is used may also be important for supporting optimal health. Lyc-O-Mato® provides natural lycopene from tomatoes, but also provides other important carotenoids and nutrients including beta-carotene, phytoene and phytofluene. Gamma-tocopherol, the main tocopherol present in the American diet has been positively associated with prostate health. Ultra Uni-Pros-Trol provides 90 mg of gamma-tocopherol from natural mixed tocopherols. The minerals zinc and selenium have also been positively associated with prostate health. This formulation uses selenium from methyl-L-selenocysteine, a form that is found in plants such as broccoli and garlic and has been postulated to be more beneficial to cellular health when compared with other forms of selenium.
