Xtra-Cellâ„¢ PgP capsules, provided by Douglas Laboratories, contain a synergistic combination of herbs, minerals and plant extracts designed to support normal functioning of cell membranes and normal blood vessel growth.
FUNCTIONS
Xtra-Cell PgP provides support to cell membranes and blood vessels through two actions: modification of P-glycoproteins (P-gp) activity and support of normal angiogenesis (blood vessel growth). P-gp proteins are found in the cell membrane and can act as pumps, moving certain pharmacotherapeutic molecules out of the cell membrane. The activity of P-gp pumps can affect the ability of certain molecules to remain in the cell, thus potentially decreasing the efficacy of therapeutic agents and increasing the body’s resistance to immune-supportive therapies. Angiogenesis is a natural process by which new blood vessels are formed and grow to supply oxygen and nutrients to cells.* Angiogenesis is a complex process that is regulated at the cellular level with a balance between factors that are proangiogenic and factors that are anti-angiogenic. Disturbances in this balance can lead to processes that favor proangiogenic factors and can lead to a proliferation of microvessel formation that can effect the health of a tissue.* The ingredients in Xtra-Cell PgP are thought to play important roles in maintaining proper cell membrane and blood vessel health.
Green Tea
Scientists have identified numerous phytochemicals including polyphenols, methylxanthines, flavonoids, and triterpenoid saponins in green tea. The polyphenols contained in tea, the majority of which are catechins, appear to provide the primary health promoting benefits associated with green tea consumption. Catechin, epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), and most notably epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) act as antioxidants and support immune function and cardiovascular health. In vitro, these nutrients have been shown to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis, as well as support healthy angiogenic and p-gp activity.*
Turmeric
Studies have shown that curcumin, a naturally occurring biologically active group of compounds from Curcuma longa (Turmeric), can function as efficient antioxidants and can help regulate the body’s normal response to inflammatory processes, as well as play important roles in maintaining healthy angiogenesis and p-gp activity.*
Milk Thistle(Silymarin)
Silymarin can provide protection to the liver by acting as an important component of the liver’s antioxidant defense. The liver generates potentially damaging, toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species as a result of its normal metabolic and detoxifying functions. Left unchecked, these radicals can initiate a chain reaction of lipid peroxidation, causing damage to cell structure and interfering with normal cell functions.
Soybeans
Isoflavones, a class of phytoestrogens found in soy, are plant-derived compounds that are similar in structure and/or function to animal estrogens. Genistein and daidzein are two predominant isoflavones found in soy. Epidemiological studies have found that individuals with high soy intake often enjoy certain health advantages. Numerous laboratory and clinical studies, investigating the health benefits of soy products, have identified soy isoflavones as key components responsible for the health benefits associated with soy foods. Numerous studies indicate that isoflavones may support the immune system, inhibit angiogenesis, and protect against oxidative damage as antioxidants.
Flax seed
Flax seed is the richest source of lignans, a class of diphenolic molecules most often found in vegetables and fruits. Studies of lignans have shown that they can play important roles in supporting the body’s normal sex hormone metabolism, as well as normal functioning of cell proliferation and angiogenesis.*
Minerals and Amino Acids
Selenium is an essential cofactor of glutathione peroxidase, a potent antioxidant and plays important roles in maintaing normal cell growth. Copper regulates iron metabolism and also helps to activate superoxide dismutase. Zinc is important for growth, immune system function, protein synthesis, antioxidant mechanisms, and wound healing. Amino acids are the building blocks for all body proteins, structural proteins that build muscle, connective tissues, bones and other structures, and functional proteins in the form of thousands of metabolically active enzymes. Amino acids provide the body with the nitrogen that is essential for growth and maintenance of all tissues and structures.
